With BC's municipal elections coming this fall, we're eagerly awaiting candidates who won't turn their backs on everyday people in the Cowichan Valley, especially when it comes to issues like the climate crisis, protecting basic human rights, and sustainable city planning.
That's why members of Revolve Cowichan have put together a new resource to help you decide if you want to run a campaign in the upcoming election. We have focused on the City of Duncan, the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD), the North Cowichan Council and the Cowichan Valley School District (SD) 79 Board of Trustees.
Through hours of research and interviews with local politicians, we created this collection of resources to make this process more approachable.
Why is local government important?
Local government shapes the material conditions of our daily lives, like housing, policing, land use, and education. For too long these seats have been treated as the domain of landlords and developers who seek to build without acknowledging the inequitable systems that got us to this point. These guides are here to demystify the process of running in municipal elections and to offer you the tools to do exactly that.
