Looking forward to our conversation about Indigenous and Eurosettler shared histories, Residential School survival and the recent rise of racism in the Cowichan Valley.
We are reading a story of survival by Quw’utsun Elder Ray Toni Charlie.
We also offer a recommendation for a more theory-laden political read, Red Skin, White Mask by Glen Sean Coulthard. This text challenges recognition as a method of organizing difference and identity in liberal politics and questions the assumption that contemporary difference and past histories of destructive colonialism between the state and Indigenous peoples can be reconciled through a process of acknowledgment. Here is a link to an article in The Walrus with an excerpt from the text: https://thewalrus.ca/red-skin-white-masks/
Reminder that we are a thematic book club, which means you are welcome to join in the conversataion even if you haven’t engaged with the material!
Hope to see you on March 9th!
